Strategic Conquest
As you can see, there is a radio button immediately to the left of each piece type. The
button that is darkened indicates which piece type is currently under construction. To choose a piece type for
production, click on the radio button to the left of the piece desired and click on the button marked Continue (or
you can hit the Return key). If the city were land locked, that is, if it were not located adjacent to water, there
would not be any radio buttons next to any of the ocean-going pieces, and that city would not be able to produce
any of these piece types.
Once you have chosen the piece type to produce, you will be confronted with the Save As menu. In this menu, you
choose the name of your saved game, the volume in which it will be saved, or you can opt to not save the game at
all, by hitting the Cancel button.
Menu Commands The Apple Menu
Underneath the Apple menu is a selection entitled "About Strategic Conquest." Choosing this selection will display
information about the version of the program and the programmer.
The File Menu
The File menu has several selections: New Game, Resume Game, Save, Save As, and Quit. All of these selections,
except for Quit, will take effect at the end of the Enemy's turn on the current day. A dialog box to that effect
will be displayed when any of these selections is chosen. You can then choose to continue the command by hitting
Return or clicking on the Continue button, or you may choose to cancel the command that you have chosen by clicking
on the Cancel button. If you choose to cancel the chosen selection, play will resume as if you had never chosen
that selection.
The New Game selection will create a new scenario, after the Enemy has completed his turn for that day. Strategic
Conquest Plus will then confront you with the Game Set Up, City Production, and Save As menus, exactly as if you
had just launched Strategic Conquest Plus.
The Resume Game selection will resume a previously saved game, after the Enemy has taken his moves for that day.
After a little set up time, your old scenario will continue with the day after the last day played before it was
saved.
The Save selection will save the progress of the current game, after the Enemy has taken his moves for the day.
The Save As works similarly to the Save selection, with one major difference: It allows you to change the volume or
file name to which your game is saved.
The Quit selection will quit the game immediately. You will be prompted for confirmation of the command, but once
you click on Continue, the game will end.
The Moves Menu
The Moves menu is the most frequently accessed menu, so there are keyboard equivalents available for each of the
commands in the menu, which are listed to the right of each of the commands. Selections in the Moves menu include:
Sleep, Wake, Transport Load, Random, City Aircraft Destination, Army Destination, Stack Move, Patrol, Skip (or
next), and Move Later (or come back). Each of these commands will work on any piece that is within the window
available to you at the time, with the exception of the Sleep, Random, Skip, and Move Later commands. These only
work on the Current Piece (the piece flashing).
The Sleep command will put the current piece to "Sleep" until such time arises that you wish to again move the
piece. In essence, this command will skip over the chosen piece's moves during the current turn, and each
subsequent tum, until after it has been Waken up. This command will only work on the current piece, so it may not
be used during the Enemy's tum. A Sleeping piece will be automatically Waken if an Enemy piece passes adjacent to
it.
The Wake command removes the effect of any command (except city army & aircraft destination) from the Moves
Menu. To Wake a piece, select Wake from the Moves menu, and click on the piece(s) that you desire to awaken.
Following that, the piece(s) will once again be
active (if that piece's move has already passed for the day, it will be skipped until the next day). If an Enemy
piece passes adjacent to any piece under the control of the Moves menu, or if the piece comes adjacent to an
uncontrolled city, the piece will be waken up and will be ready for command by the user.
The Transport Load function will issue orders to a transport piece to Load and Sleep any Friendly army piece on
board which passes adjacent to it. To Load a transport, select Transport Load from the Moves menu, then click on
the transport that you wish to load. This command will be canceled when the transport has become fully loaded, an
Enemy piece passes adjacent to the transport, the transport is given a Destination (see Movement Types), or the
Wake command is issued to the transport.
The Random command will make the current piece move in Random patterns. To make a piece move in Random patterns,
wait until it is the current piece, and select Random from the Moves menu. Again, it will only awaken if it comes
adjacent to an uncontrolled city or Enemy piece, or if the Wake command is issued to it. If aircraft are
Randomized, they will not refuel automatically.
The City Aircraft Destination command will order all aircraft which have no current destination orders to move to a
desired sector. Select City Aircraft Destination from the Moves menu, move the cursor over the city desired as the
beginning point of the move, then click and drag the cursor over to the desired destination sector. To cancel the
city's orders for Destination, select City Aircraft Destination and simply click on the city to cancel the orders
for.
The Army Destination command functions identically to the City Aircraft Destination, except that it gives orders to
army pieces.
The Stack Move command will make a group of pieces move toward a selected sector. To set a Destination for a stack
of pieces, select Stack Move from the Moves menu, move the cursor over the desired pieces to give a Destination to,
then click and drag the cursor over to the desired Destination sector.
The Patrol command will make a piece move between two sectors. To make a piece Patrol between two sectors, select
the Patrol command from the Moves menu, move the cursor over the piece to set Patrol for, then click and drag the
cursor over to the desired end point of the patrol. Once the piece is ordered to Patrol, it will automatically move
between the beginning and end points of the Patrol until awakened, or an Enemy piece comes adjacent to it.
The Skip command will skip all of the remaining moves for the current piece, but will leave it awake during the
next day. To Skip the current piece's remaining moves, simply select the Skip command from the Moves menu. It will
then be the turn of the next piece.
The Move Later command functions identically to the Skip Command, except that the piece will not lose its remaining
moves for that day, and the computer will come back to that piece later in that day.
The Displays Menu
Under the Displays menu are several selections, including Current Piece, City List, World Map, and Land Grid. The
Current Piece display will shift the window displayed to include the piece whose turn it is to move. This is
unnecessary to use if the current piece is already in the visible window. The City List display will show a roster
of the cities currently controlled by
the Friendly player (you), including their location and their production status, and it will tell you how many days
of the game have elapsed since the campaign began. The World Map is a map of the world, showing you how much of the
world has been explored, what level of difficulty you are currently at, and the day number. The Land Grid selection
toggles the rectangular land grids on or off.
The Options Menu
Under the Options menu are several selections. There are four choices which control the level of Sound output (Off,
Soft, Medium, and Loud). Pause after attack does just that -pauses after each attack until a key is pressed or the
mouse is clicked. Also residing under the Options menu is the Auto Play toggle, which will have the computer make
the moves and
